In a Victorian house, the paint you see is the smallest part of the job. The finish that makes a period room feel right is decided in the hours of preparation no one photographs — and it's where shortcuts show up first.
Read the house before you touch it
Older homes move, breathe and carry a history of previous decoration. Layers of old paint, lime plaster, timber sash windows and delicate mouldings each ask for a different approach. The first task is simply to understand what you're working with, rather than treating every surface the same.
Repair, don't just cover
Cracks, flaking and tired filler don't disappear under a fresh coat — they telegraph straight through it. Good preparation means cutting out and making good properly: raking cracks, filling in the right material, and sanding back so the surface is sound and true before any paint arrives.
On original joinery and mouldings, that work is slower and more careful. The reward is detail that looks crisp rather than clogged.
Respect how the building breathes
Many Victorian and Georgian surfaces were built with lime and need to move and dry. Sealing them behind a modern, impermeable film can trap moisture and cause paint to fail — and, worse, hold damp against the fabric. Choosing breathable, period-appropriate materials protects both the finish and the house.
Protect the home while you work
Preparation also means protecting everything that isn't being painted. Floors, furniture, fireplaces and fittings are covered, dust is kept down, and the site is left clean each evening. In an occupied period home, that care is part of the craft, not an afterthought.
Then, and only then, the colour
With the surfaces sound and the house protected, colour goes on over a proper foundation — and stays looking right for years rather than months. In a period home especially, the finish everyone admires is really the preparation, wearing a top coat.
